Why Swimming Matters
Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Some need to be taught. But once they learn, it’s a life skill. If your dog falls in your pool, knowing how to swim and find the exit could save their life. Here’s how to teach your dog to swim in five simple steps.
How to Teach Your Dog to Swim: The 5 Steps
The process is simple, but it requires patience. Here’s how to teach your dog to swim safely:
Step 1 – Start in the Shallow End
Put your dog on a leash and walk slowly onto the pool steps with them. Let them stand where their head stays above water. Have them get in and out a few times so they learn they can always exit. If they’re nervous, get in with them and use treats or toys to make it fun.
Step 2 – Go Deeper Gradually
Once they’re comfortable with shallow water, continue teaching your dog to swim by moving into deeper water one step at a time. Let them relax at each depth before going deeper. If they’re small, you can hold them while you walk into the water. Watch their body language. If they seem scared, slow down and try again tomorrow.
Step 3 – Teach Them to Paddle
This is where your dog actually learns to swim. Move into deeper water and let your dog start to paddle. If they’re struggling, put your arm under their stomach for support. A dog life vest helps here. Once they’re paddling, slowly remove your hand. Keep sessions short (3-5 minutes) and stay right next to them.
Step 4 – Practice the Exit
This is the most important step. Your dog needs to know how to get out. Use a leash to gently lead them up the steps several times. Then have someone call them from the top while you’re in the pool a few feet away. Once they’ve got it, practice from different spots in the pool so they can find the exit from anywhere. Do this a few times over the next week.
Step 5 – Keep Practicing
Throw toys in different areas of the pool, including the deep end. Some dogs learn in one session; others need several. Keep it fun with praise and treats. Don’t exhaust them. If they’re tired, stop. And never leave your dog unattended in or around the pool, even if they’re a great swimmer.
