Efficiency also means a backyard pool that’s as fuss-free as possible.
Our intuitive automation system lets you schedule routine cleaning and filtration, and it gives you control over every other function, such as heating, lighting, water features, and the spa jets. Better yet, you can command your pool & spa via PC, tablet, phone, or even voice command.
Would you like to avoid the typical levels of chlorine and chemical treatments a pool requires? We have a solution for you.
With our virtually chlorine-free SmartPure® system, your family will enjoy a healthier, more comfortable swimming experience.
We make pool maintenance more efficient in another way: Our unique SmartGuard® Soft & Clear system inhibits the growth of ugly scale and icky biofilm on pool surfaces—minimizing the needed brushing of the pool tile and interior surface.

Our Gunite Pool Construction Process
We want to ensure that every detail of your new backyard resort meets your expectations. That’s why we approach pool construction in the Gulf Coast with superb attention to detail at every step of the way. Here is a basic overview of the key phases in our typical process of building gunite pools in and near Pensacola.
Based on your property, local building requirements, and your pool’s design, materials, and features, this sequence may vary slightly.
Design1Our designer creates a 3D rendering and finalizes the design with your written approval
PRE-CONSTRUCTION2We obtain engineering and building permits, lay out your pool, and prepare the site for excavation.
EXCAVATION3An excavator digs your pool, dump trucks haul away the dirt, and our crew cleans up the access area.
STEEL REINFORCEMENT4A crew installs a network of reinforcing steel rebar, per an engineer-approved schedule. A licensed electrician bonds all metal components.
PLUMBING5Install pump, filter, and any other equipment. Run underground plumbing lines for main drains, skimmer, returns, and any other project features such as spa jets, solar system, and water features.
PRE-CONCRETE INSPECTION6We request an inspection from the local municipality to confirm that pool construction meets local building codes.
CONCRETE7Shoot concrete through a high-pressure hose to form a monolithic pool shell, including steps, benches, and any spa, bench, tanning ledges, or other integrated features.
DECK LAYOUT8Create a layout on your site, and grade the earth so it is level for building a deck at the intended elevation(s).
ELECTRIC9Run an electrical line from the main service panel to equipment location. Install control panel, lights, switches, and other electrical components.
COPING & TILE10Install coping material on pool & spa perimeter and any bond beam. Apply tile at pool & spa waterline and—as applicable—on raised beam.
DECKING11Concrete Deck: Install sub-base and pour and finish the material. Paver Deck: Lay down a sand base, and set the pavers.
HARDSCAPE FEATURES12Construct any special features such as fire pits, outdoor kitchens, sitting walls, pergolas, and landscape boxes.
CLEAN UP13We remove construction debris and clean your pool & spa shell in preparation for its interior finish.
PRE-PLASTER INSPECTION14We request an inspection from the local municipality to confirm that all barrier code requirements have been met (e.g., self-closing gates, alarms on doors leading to pool).
PLASTER AND WATER FILL15Apply a smooth marcite or ColorQuartz finish to waterproof the concrete pool & spa shell. We begin filling the pool with water.
PEBBLE FINISH OPTION16If project includes a pebble finish: Crews return the next day to specially treat the finish to expose the pebbles, and then they start the water fill.
START-UP & ORIENTATION17Our technician activates the pool equipment. He will then show you how to operate your new aquatic retreat and all of its features!
Imagine: Pool water that won’t wreak havoc on your family with bleached hair, burning eyes, dry, itchy skin, and those awful odors! Our advanced SmartPure® systems ensure a sparkling aquatic playground safely and effectively—but without the usual chemical routine and accompanying hassles and hazards.
What is the process for building a gunite pool in San Diego? (concrete / shotcrete)
Gunite pool construction (with gunite or shotcrete) involves multiple phases.
After planning and designing the pool, these steps typically include: permitting, layout, excavation, steel installation, plumbing, electric, concrete application, installation of tile and coping, deck installation, plaster/interior finish, and start-up.
The sequence here may vary based on local building codes and practices, as well as if the project contains any specialized custom design features.
How long does it take to build a gunite pool?
With normal backyard conditions and weather that allows for the construction to proceed, builders in San Diego usually need about 90 days from excavation to complete a typical residential gunite pool.
In some geographic markets, build times average a few weeks longer. In general, the more complex the design and the more special features it has, the more time your project will take.
Other variables often extend build times. Among them: time of year, permits/variances, difficult building conditions (e.g., property access, hitting groundwater, subterranean rock, or unmarked utility lines), addendums to change the design or features, customer payment progress, adjacent outdoor features under construction, and custom material choices requiring a special order.
Gunite construction is multiphase—requiring a series of steps using various tradesmen for each. Reputable pool builders adhere to the timelines and terms outlined in the sales contract.
What underground obstacles can hinder inground pool construction?
Beneath the ground, several conditions can slow or impede pool construction.
In San Diego, examples include sand, clay, caliche (a kind of mineral deposit), rock, decomposed granite, extended tree roots, a high local water table (in which water from the earth seeps into an excavated hole), and buried utility lines that utility-reporting services did not identify.
While qualified pool contractors like Blue Haven Pools use strategies to overcome these subterranean hurdles, build schedules may sometimes be extended.
How do soil conditions affect inground pool construction?
Soil that expands, contracts, shifts, or is unstable for other reasons can impact a pool’s construction and long-term stability.
For example, in an open excavated hole, sandy soil may cause the walls to collapse. Soil with a high clay content may expand or contract with seasonal temperature or moisture changes.
Professional pool contractors are accustomed to these kinds of challenges and have solutions for the majority of them. Tactics vary by the nature of the challenge and building practices in the local market.
How do inground pool builders in San Diego address special soil conditions for gunite pools?
Builders use a variety of techniques to overcome soil challenges for gunite pool construction.
For example, to address unstable earth, they may lay a bed of compacted fill with pea gravel in the excavated hole or increase the amount of gunite and steel in the pool shell. To address sandy soil, they may frame the excavated hole with plywood to hold its shape until gunite is applied.
In certain cases, an analysis by a soil engineer may be needed, and more extensive tactics may be required.
